A redesigned iOS 7 is coming out this fall. What happens to FMX/iOS apps "look and feel"? Can EMBT keep things "pixel perfect"?

I bet the Oxygene guys won't be sweating it. ;)

  1. I guess that is impossible to answer until the API changes are made known.

  2. XE4 FMX iOS apps will look and behave like iOS 6.

  3. That TMS iOS package is looking better by the day.

  4. Another issue will be during the iOS cross-over period, when some people out there have iOS6 and others have iOS7.  If FMX keeps up with iOS7, then those people on iOS6 end up with apps that look out of place.  Damned if you do, damned if you don't.    Again, I guess it shouldn't be an issue for Oxygene.

Right now there are already multiple styles for iOS5, iOS6, iPad, non-retina and the right one is loaded when the app starts (the binaries contain multiple styles). I guess EMBT will drop the iOS5 style in XE5 and will add an iOS 7 style.

  6. This is a system wide theme change. I would imagine any app that followed Apple's previous design guidelines will need some re-design to fit into the new look and feel. This is not an FMX issue and Oxygene won't save you.

Google established Holo design guidelines relatively early in Android's consumer life. Many apps had to change their style and they did. Most, if not all, release today with Holo design in mind. Apple will have to go through the same transitional period.

Given the age of the OS, the number of apps in store and the late decision to establish a new look, it will take time for apps to change and many never will.

  7. Kyle Miller Time will tell how much of an issue it is for FMX, but there is no doubt that it will be much less an issue for Oxygene.

  8. Oxygene has no ui framework at all, just raw cocoa without full interface builder ui integration. That is worse, IMHO.

  9. Kevin Powick As a developer, we'll know in time how much more or less of an issue an iOS 7 supporting FMX is. For FMX engineers @EMB, more. For FMX consumer, less. In either case, if you followed old Apple design guidelines and didn't design minimalist and embraced gradients, skeuomorphism, etc., you have some work ahead.
