Looks like we might be very close to Android coming to RAD Studio. Would this give you a reason to upgrade if you are still running an older version?

That depends on the way it is implemented and how seamless it integrates into the IDE. I just want to hit the "Run" Button and thats it. Another point is the performance on Android.
ReplyDeleteBut generally speaking, the Android implementation becomes more and more interesting as iOS is drastically losing market share to Android.
The plattform of choice today should be Android for most cases - IMHO.
We're using Android on industrial devices which have "limited" GPUs (when they have them). I don't see FMX doing any good on those...
ReplyDeleteEric Grange That's a good point... What are you currently using to create your Android Apps?
ReplyDeletePerhaps TMS will do a native Android control lib, like they did for iOS?
ReplyDeleteEric Grange - What brand and kind of industrial devices? I've been looking for handheld scanners that run Android.
ReplyDeleteThey are from Bluebird / Pidion
ReplyDeleteSven Finke using Eclipse / ADT and WebView (HTML5 + js), and a bit like a customized Phonegap
ReplyDeleteWe have also been using Eclipse / ADT, going to start playing around with Android Studio soon though.
ReplyDeleteI bet it will only be part of the highest priced SKUs (enterprise and architect) and a costly update for the professional version.
ReplyDeleteI was ready to give up on ever using Delphi for Android development, but now I'm curious. It looks pretty good, given that it works well and will be available at a reasonable price, not like iOS today, I am willing to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteSean Bertinotti To answer your question. It would certainly give me a reason to upgrade. I stopped upgrading after XE2 because I was waiting for Android support to be introduced.
ReplyDeleteFrédéric Hannes I'm in pretty much the same situation, especially considering the price for each upgrade :-) I'm still using RAD Studio 2009, but getting excited for XE5
ReplyDeleteSean Bertinotti I am actually considering to upgrade now, given that the Android support will be covered by the 6 months maintenance offer that Embarcadero currently offers for RAD Studio purchases.
