Is anyone else having problems burning XE5 to a DVD? It seems the ISO is a hair larger than the 4.7 GB DVD+R blank disks I have in stock. I guess I need to buy some dual-layer blanks.

I hate the web download installer since I have to install on several machines (yes I own 2 licenses) and downloading 19+ GB is not fun over our crappy bonded T1 lines. I would also like to have a master archive copy for future reinstalls.

And you don't want to buy one for $35? ;)
ReplyDeleteYou could always order the media for $30 (or so). Or not..
ReplyDeleteHmm. I've probably spent that much in labor, but I have never been one to delay gratification. Hmm maybe I can run the ISO through WinRAR and chop out all the junk I don't want. Maybe then it will fit on a single layer DVD! :-)
ReplyDeleteUSB pen to transfer between machines, then use some ISO mounter, either the built-in in newer Windows versions, or say http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html. Would be considerably faster to install from too.

ReplyDeleteI only have some small USB memory sticks with insufficient capacity for 4.8 GB. I think I will go to the local office supply store and buy some bigger DVDs. This is the better long term solution since I will end up with a master disk.
It turns out that you can unpack the ISO with WinRAR and save it to a desktop folder. You can install normally from there. I have a Gigabit Copper LAN, so copying the ISO to other machines is fast.
I always use Virtual Clone Drive for ISO images.
ReplyDeleteI always deleted the non-English languages and other stuff from the ISO the I'm never going to use. That saves a ton of space. And seriously, an 8 GB USB stick is about $10. :-)
ReplyDeleteNot only you can unpack the ISO to the disk folder (I use free 7-zip achiver for it) you can also apply official updates to it. I usually replaced help files after official help updates so next installations go with the latest help system.

ReplyDeleteGood idea! That will save some time when I need to do some updates.
I found some blank dual layer DVDs at home tonight. I made a new master disk so I now have my home PC set up with XE5. I'll set up my work PCs tomorrow.
