Is there a chance to revive ProfDHTMLEdit ?

We use this component in all our projects for providing an embedded HTML editor. Unfortunately the development and maintenance of the component has been stopped some years ago already and the company ProfGrid disappeared from the market without leaving a trail.

We have the source code as part of the license and we found here and there useful tips for getting the component upgraded to the newest Delphi versions. But we feel uncomfortable with the situation.

I have some questions:

1. If you are the owner of the ProfGrid company (Nicolas?), would it be possible to give the components to the public domain?
1a. If not: Would you sell all rights to us so we can make the component public domain?

2. Is there a Delphi developer who would be interested in maintaining the source code of the component? I understand this would be legally limited as a service to users who did also pay for the ProfDHTMLEdit component incl. the source code?
2a. If yes: How much would this cost?
2b. Are there other users of this component who are interested in such a solution?

3. Are there any alternatives to ProfDHTMLEdit? (a wrapper component for the editing features in Internet Explorer, optional for Chrome ...)

4. Is there a websites that provides a documentation about the necessary changes for upgrading ProfDHTMLEdit to the various Delphi versions?

We are willing to invest in any suitable solution but with the clear intention of making the results of this finally available to the public domain.

  1. Roland Kossow EmbeddedWB seems to be more focused on browsing than editing. The repositories I did find look more like a backup of the sources previously available on bsalsa.com (the origin of this component).
But maybe somebody can direct me to a newer version of EmbeddedWB so we can have a closer look at the editing features again.

  2. Fred Ahrens If I remember right from years ago, one of the included demos touched the topic how to implement editing capabilities based on top of the component. But I certainly don't think that you will find anything like a fully fledged html editor around there.
I just posted it as a possibility.

  3. Roland Kossow I'll have a look at it. Maybe I just never detected the editing features in EmbeddedWB due to the existence of ProfDHTMLEdit.

  4. How would you keep this up with ongoing HTML standards?

  5. Jeroen Wiert Pluimers As the component is only a wrapper for the Internet Explorer engine (similar to TWebBrowser) this shouldn't be a major problem. We use the editor for quite simple styled documents and the content editing is limited to normal text styles, tables, embedded pictures and links to other resources - so, nothing special that's not already covered in previous HTML standards.

  6. Kevin McCoy Looks like we are on the same level of required editing features.

  7. Erik van Putten Thank you for the link. I had only a bookmark pointing to the Yahoo group that already disappeared.

  8. Erik van Putten Oh, and development is still active. Actually I hate embedding OCX (for no particular reason) but I will give it a try.
