A while back i asked if anyone had a trick for using the IDE in a VM. The specific problem is that i resize the VMs window frequently and the IDE does not (by design) synchronize the size of the windows when it goes into the debug layout.

Anyone of the people into extending the IDE that agrees with me that this can be very annoying? An option to have design and debug layout's synchronize their size and position would be cool.

  1. I use the IDE in a VM all the time, but I tend to use the VM full screen... but even in other cases, I'm not sure I've seen the issue you mention. Can you elaborate more... and also indicate which version (but I doubt this was changed).

  2. Which VM are you using? I use mine fullscreen as well, but if you are using Fusion or Parallels you can use a view which places the IDE window on your host OS desktop, letting you resize the IDE window itself instead of the VM. Would that help?

  3. Marco Cantù it's not a bug at all.

I use more than one VM and tend to use the VMs windows "zoomed". When resizing the VM i often resize the IDE window inside the VM. When i hit F9 to debug, the IDE goes into the "debug layout". Since the layouts stored in the IDE also remembers the IDE window size and position i need to resize the debug window too; this is the annouing part.

I'd like for the size and position "now", i.e. directly after resizing, to be "copied" to the other layout when the IDE "switches modes". That way i line up everything (for example when debugging GUI issues), hit F9 and continue.

I hope i made myself clear.

  4. +David, i use VirtualBox. Virtual Box also have these different "window" modes. However, i have found that these other more fancy ways are problematic for me. When hitting the road i transfer the entire VM to my laptop so all about window and screen changes completely.

Perhaps VB has been better at these things. I'll take some time and check it out. Thanks. However, just to be clear, what i'm asking for is really something not related to VMs at all.

  5. Sounds like you are using the IDE in Classic Undocked mode for editing is that correct?

  6. like others I normally use full screen in the VM and have no issues, I have fusion so might try unity mode but really that should be the same as a full VM.  Maybe the best way to illustrate your issue is to make a short video of it ?
