We just re-published a post by Rolf Lampa, on improving performance in Delphi Bold applications, by replacing navigation code with derived links in the model.

The post was originally posted on howtodothings.com back in 2002 (then owned and ran by Peter Morris) and received quite some positive feedback (see mail thread linked in post).

Unfortunatley the images got lost in the original post at some stage, but we recently found a way to restore them, and so here is the post again! Hope you enjoy! :)

  1. Great to see something republished. What is the status of Bold for Delphi these days?

  2. I never used it, but I gather it's no longer available. Yet plenty of people have produced ORMs since. One question that springs to mind is, do any of these contain a Bold compatibility layer using the Bold API - a drop-in replacement?

  3. David Millington: Unfortunately the links seem broken now, but it seems they did release Bold for free for Delphi 2005, at some point: http://edn.embarcadero.com/article/33058
Maybe it's possible to get Embarcadero Technologies to fix the links?

  4. There has also been a petition to try to convince Embarcadero Technologies to release Bold as open source https://www.change.org/p/embarcadero-technologies-release-the-intellectual-property-of-bold-for-delphi.

That has unfortunately not lead to much success as of yet, but in the meanwhile, the page contains useful links to the current state of Bold, for anyone interested.

  5. No, Bold was never released for free. There was discussion (and requests) about open sourcing it. A more likely option is to leverage updated versions, done outside of Embarcadero. There are some large companies on Bold, would be nice to have a version that works on the latest Delphi.
