If I add them, it would be possible to "quiet" them if you do not want to see them, but this would require some manual action.
I already added a German forum, but it's "hidden by default".

can't you just add a filter on the URL ?

Paul TOTH Could be a poor man's filter, but being in the url, it may be problematic, f.i. if someone links to /fr and you click on it, would you want to see only the fr feeds, or would you expect to be redirected to your own personal preferences? (which might be /en)

Well, /fr should display french feeds with, like Embarcadero's docwiki, a list of available language (filters). I don't think that localization is required with so few information on the page.

Putting the filter in the URL let you filter feeds without creating an account...and define the URLs for the list of available languages/filters.

ReplyDeleteBut what do you think the default should be? Non-English feeds visible by default? Or only in their national URLs or when manually enabled in account settings?
I feel that if they are not visible by default, they will not be very "discoverable" (given there will be few of them), but on the other hand, feeds in a language you do not understand to do not give a good first impression.
Localisation is always tricky. I'd probably go by language, but what about regional interesting stuff? Where would you put "all"?

Please, do not restrict to english only feeds. It is a bad move (delphifeeds had). There are many countries (like mine) where people doesn't speak english and prefer to have technical content in their own language. But Google translator can often be good enough to consume non-english content.
ReplyDeleteIf it's easy to filter / hide some feeds, that's fine with me. But I'd prefer a way to filter without having to log in. /fr etc. would be fine.

ReplyDeleteMagno Lima You don't want to keep a zillion preference on a server. That's the whole point of RSS. Just keep a bunch of feeds and let the consumers decide (and keep track of) the feeds they use.
ReplyDeleteInclude the non-English feeds. You could include a Translate link next to them that will translate them in place on the fly (like Google+ and Facebook do). Or you can auto translate them server side. You can use the Microsoft Translate API to do it (first 2 million characters a month are free). https://www.microsoft.com/translator/api.aspx

ReplyDeleteAnd if you visit the, say, /de version of the site, it should show the German feeds, despite preferences (IMO of course :)) Let the main "/" part of the site follow preferences.
Maybe you could have a small status bar appear at the top saying "You are viewing the German version of this site. Click here to visit your normal page" or something?

ReplyDeleteWhen/if enough non-English feeds are added, I will look at the filtering, right now it would be overkill.
Translator API could be nice, but there is always the risk they'll pull the plug like Google did... well, cross that bridge when we get to it :)

ReplyDeleteCompletely coincidentally I have dated girls living in all those countries. That has nothing to do with me learning the language, of course ;)
(Although, quite seriously, next time I go to Delphi-tage I want to be able to speak and understand a bit more German than I did last year.)
