So, my coworker is getting an Access Violation when typing into the IDE Insight... and we can't seem to fix it. A single letter will do, and once typed the Access Violation is triggered as long as the letter is there (holding ESC for a bit usually works to get out of this).

Running XE6.1 on a new Win 8.1 x64 install.

We've tried reinstalling Delphi, no dice. We've tried with and without the IDE fix pack.

Any ideas what it might be? Some installed package that's screwed up somehow?

Here's the stack trace without the fix pack:

  1. What is the actual AV?
    Going by stack provided, it looks like that the property editor (object inspector) is causing the issue...

  2. Nicholas Ring Access violation at address 2111BB82 in module 'designide200.bpl'. Read of address 00000000.

  3. That line (in XE7 but the line number matches exactly) is:

    Result := FPropList^[0].PropInfo^.PropType^;

    So it seems that it some type info isn't available for something - Is a project is open at the time?

  4. Nicholas Ring Ah, good point, yes our main project (which works fine on all other machines). I'll try with a non-visual project and no project.

  5. Nicholas Ring Good call, non-visual project is OK, empty VCL application = AV.

    So now I just got to figure out which package is fucking it all up...

  6. Asbjørn Heid I don't envy you task now... Hope it is easy to find :D Good luck.

  7. The debugger is your friend. I would just disable some categories and see if it helps, but well your IDE Insight lost that feature. http://qc.embarcadero.com/wc/qcmain.aspx?d=123170

  8. Uwe Schuster Yeah IDE insight took a nosedive when they made it non-modal :(

  9. Asbjørn Heid Don't get me started on the IDE Insight changes.. :/ The idea was to make it feel more like Apple's Spotlight search feature... which in the latest versions of the MacOSX is now more like the original modal IDE insight... I suppose we had it right all along, no? Not everything Apple does is always the "right" way to do something.

  10. Allen Bauer I understand the rationale that you wanted to make it more visible. But yes, the modal dialog was 100x better in my view.
    A big "search" button on the IDE toolbar would be an improvement over the current weird edit box.
