So +Kevin Powick talked about coffee here, and this maybe a good time for me to receive some advises on taking my coffee making skill to the next level. Here in China we don't have a long coffee drinking tradition, and I mostly learned making coffee from self experiments. I use a Mocha pot with paper filter, Lavazza pre-ground coffee, sugar and powdered milk.

  1. I don't know about you guys, but I drink a LOT of coffee, so, I have to drink it black(without sugar), otherwise, my blood sugar level is a roller coaster, and I enjoy it more;

    whenever I visit someone and offers me coffee with sugar already, I have to turn it down, because the taste is terrible for me;

    usually, I put a bit of milk in it, but not coffee milk(yuk!)

  2. I love pour-over coffee brewing. I have a grinder (Baratza Encore), a V60 filter and an Hario kettle. I often buy fresh coffee beans. Almost two cups every day. No sugar/milk. Simple & pure.

  3. Dorin Duminica I'm the same, I drink a lot of coffee. So much so that I started getting serious headaches. Eventually I traced it to my coffee drinking habits. I went on a caffeine detox for a week, which was hell, then switched to good quality decaf coffee which contains about 1% of the caffeine that I used to consume. Now I don't feel guilty drinking a lot of coffee any more.

    And don't let anybody tell you decaf is bad or tastes different - it very much depends on your quality of coffee.

    I recently started using coffee pods (NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto) and buy Decaf Lungo which I make in a mug, then top up with lots of milk. Absolute bliss and the taste is always consistent! :-)

  4. Graeme Geldenhuys I also drink a lot of water, so, I think that's why no headaches... I'll probably taste some decaf to see how that goes

  5. I do the same - lots of water. My problem was that I drank about 8 mugs of coffee a day without realising. I only noticed onces somebody asked me to start keeping count. I shocked myself. Switching to decaf did wonders, plus I cut down to about 4-5 smaller cups a day now. :)

  6. I'm more like 3-4 coffees, but strong ones, I need it to stay alert and wired (:

  7. About the headaches -- overconsumption of coffee can do that.  But the key is to just push though.  Live with the pain for a while.  Eventually your head will understand that it can't get what it wants by whining about it and the headaches will go away. And you can drink more coffee.

  8. Grinding your own beans is worth it. I generally avoid pre-ground coffee unless I am desperate.

  9. Thank you guys, I like Italy coffee. I think I'l try decaf since sometimes I get headaches too. Apart from grinding the coffee yourself (which I think too much work when using a Mocha pot), any other suggestions? Thanks :)

  10. I'm trying this new coffee a friend of mine is selling (Organo Gold --  We'll see).   However, I drink one or two cups in the morning (with cream and sugar), and then drink tea (Pu-Erh) the rest of the day, without cream or sugar.  I figure I don't like coffee without cream or sugar (I can drink it, but I can drink beer too),  I might as well drink something I like the taste of, like Pu-erh tea

  11. Try a French Press coffee maker.  Simple, easy, and inexpensive compared to fancy machines.  No paper filters to buy either.

  12. Thanks Kevin Powick, I googled it and definitely it's worth trying!
