Programmer / Software Developer
Position Specifications
Information technology professional, participating in or overseeing a variety of assignments that provide for the development of applications using the Delphi Object Oriented Programming Language (Delphi 7).
Position, under general supervision, conceives, creates, implements and maintains applications following defined project methodologies. Interacts with users of project teams to establish systems specifications and resolve problems.  Formulates system scope and objectives, and devises and modifies procedures to solve problems. Prepares detailed specs from which programs will be written.  Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and documents those program plans and organizes the development of technical support protocol, maintains operating systems, responds to system users, evaluates software and system problems and potential solutions to application systems requirements.  Provides on-call support for production problem resolution.  Recommends system improvements, new applications and develops plans to improve service.  
The work requires knowledge of systems design and development practices, concepts and methods. The Programmer, under the supervision of the head of IT, develops client-server-based applications for administering the operations of a major Toy Manufacturer.  The Programmer develops programs that support the sales, customer service, collections, order fulfillment, inventory and purchasing functions. The Programmer is expected to conduct system analysis and development, with limited support from professional staff, to keep our systems current with changing technologies. Programmers work closely with other programmers to maintain current applications and develop new applications to meet company needs.  Guidelines tend to be very general; therefore incumbents must use judgment in determining the most appropriate methods and procedures to complete assignments. 
Contact is primarily with departmental employees, systems and network users and management to provide and exchange technical information, to plan and coordinate work activities and to resolve project issues and/or technical problems.
Skills Required
§  Able to navigate the Delphi Environment minimum 10 years experience, Crystal Report  Writer knowledge, Experience with SQL Server, Database Design and Performance
§  Able to write client/server systems.  Full understanding of front-end and back-end development, including working knowledge of database transactions and concurrency issues.
§  Must have excellent problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Work is usually performed in an office environment.
The Programmer must possess advanced technical skills, including a strong knowledge of data structures and the ability to learn new programming languages quickly. As new technologies emerge and impact our systems, the Programmer is expected to learn these technologies very quickly and resolve any problems involved in integrating new technologies with our systems. The Programmer is a key technical resource for other Senior Staff, providing advice, training and technical support for various projects. In addition, the Programmer works closely with professional technical staff in the IT management team in evaluating current systems and making decisions on future development.
Qualifications
Required: effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of clients and staff; experience and ability to teach or instruct others (including persons who do not have a technical background); ability to work productively in a team; experience using and operating in a Delphi environment; strong knowledge of SQL Server; ability to learn new programming languages quickly; minimum GPA of 2.0.
Preferred:  experience programming with any of the following languages: Delphi 7.0, SQL Server 2005, Crystal Reports 11, ADO; experience writing program documentation; GPA of 2.3 or higher.

Maintain version control of all development using Visual SourceSafe. (*)
Add all Programmer projects to the IT issue tracker and keep project status updated(*)
Report weekly status to the Programmer team(*)

Optimize performance of the application 
Conduct training for new Programmer staff and other Senior Staff. (*)

  1. I just wanted to post a clarification/update on 2 things as i just spoke with the Hiring Manager.

    One is that we stopped using Visual SourceSafe several Years ago (sorry to not have updated  the spec).  We now use Mercurial for version control
    Instead of VSS.
    The second is that while the role is characterized as maintenance, this is a fast growing company and has been since its inception.  More than half of the work we do is building new functionality rather than maintenance.
