It's almost SA renewal time for me. I have a Delphi Ultimate license, which gives me a boatload of ER & DB type tools I don't use. At £1200+ it's a bit steep - have any of you ever persuaded Embarcadero to let you downgrade your license type at a renewal?

I would love to buy a renewal for Enterprise (circa £800) instead of Ultimate...

  1. I've certainly downgraded (via Grey Matter) from RAD Studio Enterprise to Delphi Only Enterprise. No issue at all. That was 2-3 years ago.

  2. I'd say go for it -- renew at the level that makes sense for you.

  3. Rob Uttley EMB will work with you to keep the subscription alive instead of losing you. I already spoke to Idera that I am going to hold off on renewing my DBA for Powerstudio unless I see where they stand on finalizing which products that will not demise.

  4. Thanks for the encouragement guys. I will give them a call on Monday and enquire about 'stepping down' an edition upon this upcoming renewal. Cheers :-)

  5. I'm wondering about renewing myself when it comes due. I've been using Raize Components since V2 and my personal thought is they should be rolled into the base Delphi product. SA for Delphi Pro is something like $600, and just to keep this one component library current (which I use in ALL of my projects) is nearly the same amount from what I can tell (although the pricing is awfully confusing). This is beyond absurd to me! I haven't even loaded up DX/Seattle because I'm not wasting my time trying to get these components to work. Without them, I can't load up any of my existing projects. So why bother with future version of Delphi? (Of course, if I were a NEW customer, I'd get a FREE LICENSE for this component suite! Because ... new users are considered more valuable to the company than long-time users -- I've been using Delphi since it was originally released. You'd think that might count for something.)

  7. David Schwartz You are correct on newbies getting additional while the current SA batch get updates and some things.

Personally I think if I have been a subscriber for more then 3 years I should get a 50 percent discount for current options that are provided in the EMB store.

Codesite originally started out with a 300 price and a 300 subscription, they finally saw that they couldn't sell it at that price so they went back to 399 for a full package and year support.

The VCL/FMX is not going to get 2000 from my company because most of the stuff I already own and tend to use TMS components alot more.

I am just waiting to see what Idera will do before making any type of decision. At the moment I have Enterprise and I am very happy with the package.

I know that the 2016 roadmap is out and I am pretty excited on that but I am very unhappy that Idera hasn't said anything besides who is on the board. I think they have to provide what is the long term plan for development of the EMB Studio and database packages.

  8. And they continue to send out these "special limited-time offers" to existing customers on SA that are only targeted at NEW customers. And they're neither "special" nor "limited-time" in that they are constantly being renewed with more stuff thrown in the further away in time it is from the last product release.

It also annoys me to no end that they continue putting out webinars and info products that require us to "sign up", knowing that we end up on their "prospecting" email list which ensures we'll continue to get these offers for new customers. I even get calls every quarter or so from someone in Marketing asking if I've had a chance to review their product offerings and if I'd like to buy a copy of Delphi. WTF?

Long-term customers on SA are who keep the business afloat, but they act as if we don't even exist, and give bonuses to all of the newbies who buy products for the first time. It would be nice to get some respect from Marketing, like we actually exist, are of value to them other than for our annual renewal fees, and maybe even a webinar or to targeted at ONLY existing customers.

It may end up that Idera will cast off the language products in a separate entity, like re-launching CodeGear. Who knows?

  9. David Schwartz It depends on marketing name recognition that they most likely have started and it seems at this point EMB will still have the name involved somehow.

As for the webinars and registration, that is a price you pay for getting a pretty neat webinar and on a weekly basis.

In the old days companies tended to send out gifts (t-shirts, company stuff) if you were a licensed owner for years, now you barely get that from anyone.

  10. We have SA at work, but I also have a personal SA (Rad Studio Enterprise). Mine comes due Sept/Oct timeframe. I'm wondering if it is indeed time to not renew my SA. I can always use my work SA. I've also decided to hedge my bets and bone up on Java and C++, in addition to my work with C# and Delphi. Unless the future of Delphi is bright.

  11. Phillip Woon I would suggest that you do have a good time frame to make that decision before renewing.

After all the years I have worked with companies, when a company does not communicate well on their intent they will lose clients. Rad Studio SA is not cheap, I am pretty sure that people sitting on the fence will jump if they continue to get a NOT warm and fuzzy feel.
