IcoFx, but you need to find an older version from the times before they started charging for it.
However, an icon is just a container for multiple images. So you can make your images in any drawing program and then collect them together into an icon file. IcoFx is one way to do that, but you could equally just use ImageMagick, say, at the command line.
RealWorld Icon Editor does the job, although I edit outside and only use it for saving icons. Paint.net has an icon format plugin but it never seems to work very well.
Just in case anyone needs a pretty neat ICON converter that works on Macs, Androids, Windows go to iconverticons.com, the cost is only $5 (US Dollars) and it does an awesome job.
I tried melander res editor and it didn't work well with resource icons and color spacing. I tried a different one, which I'll look at name tomorrow. Worked much better and dealing with resource icons.
Free, no. But i paid up fort Axialis icon editor... well... 10 to 15 years ago. And my licence is still valid for updates. Now that's a licence i really like. They make their revenue on new sets. Since i don't need those i have a really nice icon/png/editor app for, well $49 / 15 = about $3 per year.
When it comes to sizes > 1024 px i startup a VM and run GIMP.

I thought Gimp allows you to create icons as well and it is a free image package. Personally I have packages I paid for so that doesn't count.
ReplyDeleteHey, I have Gimp! Didn't even realize it. That should do the trick. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteNick Hodges be patriot! Use "Greenfish Icon Editor Pro" which is created in Lazarus / FreePascal. Full source code attached :)
ReplyDeleteHere you can find the free version of IcoFx in case you decide to go for it. http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/icofx_portable
ReplyDeleteI like real icon editor. Been using for some time. Easy to start with a 512x or 256x and then it will copy to smaller. Can add shadow effects.
ReplyDeleteI purchased mine, and I love it. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteI also prefer a commercial one - Axialis IconWorkshop - they have been generous supporters of ADUG events :)

ReplyDeleteIt's beta software and has some issues, but generally works well and it's Delphi friendly.
