Really ... a Compuserve e-mail address ... I wonder if somebody at Embarcadero still receives e-mails sent to this address.

BTW: My motivation for testing new tools drops almost to zero whenever I see such Win95ish user interfaces.

  4. Thomas Mueller I didn't test that much as the ERStudio setup caused some chaos in the configuration of my machine and I decided to go back to an earlier restore point before ERStudio was installed. And to be honest, I wasn't in the mood to do any further tests after seeing some other tools in the package that obviously haven't seen any maintenance in the last 15 years. Of course the tools I found may already be covered by some features in the main package, but due to the setup problem I couldn't have a look at the main program.

  5. Embarcadero is far from leading the market in database tools. It was originally a public company but its institutional investors demanded it look for a buyer before the stock plunged any farther. At the time, the Motley Fools Investment Guide described it as a "struggling database tools vendor". Amusingly, I've seen a major blog by an MVP extoll the virtues of Navcat; I discreetly e-mailed them to warn them that Navcat is a competitor to EMBT's products. :-)

In surveys taken at other forums dedicated to database-related topics, EMBT's tools tend to show up between 5th and 8th place in usage depending on category. Navcat is extremely popular.

In fact, I suspect that clause in the EULA about not using Delphi to compete with any of EMBT's products was really about database tools. I did some research and discovered that several database tools EMBT competes with are partially or fully written in Delphi! Navcat is - or was - one of them. I guess they got ticked off that they were using their application development product to lead the market in the database tools segment!

You can scan down this Wikipedia list and see how many database tools use Delphi:

  6. Come on... Windows 10 has the same "advanced graphics" present in Windows 3.0 as well. Visual Studio is uglier at each version. And people are still using both.
