  1. For what they want I could see $35/h. That isn't what I bid.

  2. UpWork bought ODesk a while back. ODesk had these really crazy tests you had to take to "certify" you had certain skills. I started the one for Delphi and after about 8 questions blew it off. They were all like "stupid programmer tricks" kind of questions ... things I've enver encountered in practical terms, and totally irrelevant for most practical purposes.

Later on I went through looking for people with Delphi skills, and found the vast majority of them were people who appeared to be in Asia somewhere, mostly India. Which kind of explained the nature of that silly "certification" test. (Indians, in my experience, seem to like these things, in the same way that people from England like particular kinds of humor.)

Anyway, I noticed that most of the pay scales were about 1/10th of what I'd charge, if not less. So I figured as a US Citizen with overhead typical of US residents, this wasn't a place I was going to find fruitful gigs. (I'm not about to work for less than $200-$300 per day, depending on the nature of the work. But these guys bid $100-$150 per WEEK. Uh, sorry, I can't afford that.)

But I hear lots of folks say, if you're looking for a skilled programmer, then ODesk / UPWork is a great place to find cheap labor!

  3. A lot of employers have found out the hard way, cheap Indian labor isn't all it's cracked up to be. The really good ones leave India to make better money.
