  1. It's the median salary. I bet that embedded C programmers are paid a lot more than people who have to maintain old PC and mainframe software. Also, they asked people on their websites, that sample might be biased.

  2. HAH! I love being old. I graduated in 1980 and the starting salaries for ANY programming language was about $40k (USA). In 2016 dollars at an average inflation rate of 3% (it's actually much higher over the last 36 years) then starting salaries should be around $80k. That's not the median, but an entry level salary. If instead I became a teacher, I could have retired at full salary and had my summers off. No 401k costs, no constant deadline stresses and no corporate BS. Boy did I blow it for a few extra bucks when I was young! Unionize kids!
