Just downloaded and installed it . It has an offline installer. both FireDac and DBExpress are missing . So you are back to BDE days if you need a db application . I tried and find most of the sample unable to compile due to one or other missing component, I do not think it s of any use for a regular Delphi Developer maybe if you are a starter but still i doubt it.
I doubt starter edition has any value without mobile addon. Why would anyone who want to start programming would even want to consider starter edition first with no Db connectivity second no mobile plugin when they can download Visual studio 2015 free with Cross-platform using Xamrin.
VIk vasudev I agree with you, young developer looking for web or mobile development, for desktop they will not learn new language for just limited desktop applications, while other tools have much more to offer with their free tools.
Regardless of all technical shortcomings and limitations, a free Delphi version is very interesting in itself.
The main downfalls are not really technical limitations IMHO, but more in the limited time for the offer, and the quite high price after the offer, especially given the usage limitations.
The time-limit around the offers means you cannot really use it to promote Delphi, because by the time you have something tested, up and running (tutorial site, documentation, samples etc.) the offer would have expired...
But what I meant is that you cannot go and promote "a free Delphi Starter" to people that are not already interested (ie. already in the Delphi news circles and community), because by the time you reach people that are not already interested and can get them interested, the promotion is likely to have expired.
I also think of people would could be making tutorials, introduction videos, blog posts, libraries etc. targeted at Starter XE 10.1, but given the short expiration of the promotion, by the time they are ready, the promotion will have expired as well, and their target audience will be faced with a 388 € product... which kinda prevents building any kind of momentum.
IMHO the short promotion is more likely to be an opportunity for existing hobbyists looking for a version refresh, rather than an opportunity to expand the Delphi user base.

This package should be distributed with a game engine and interfaces to electronic modules, since it doesn't have the DB components.
ReplyDeleteJust to show that Delphi can do more things than databases
raj kumar lath Does it have the ADO components?
ReplyDeleteCan someone get the Starter version and then upgrade? There is this term: This offer does not include any upgrade subscription

ReplyDeleteJust installed, ide build number is 24.0.22858.6822 (same as current Pro/Arq)
ReplyDeleteVIk vasudev Agree--cross platform development is a catch in terms of marketing

Eric Grange I don't think the time limit is on how long you can run the version, but on how long you can get it for free. Am I mistaken?
ReplyDeleteNick Hodges that's what I understood as well.
