Ann: NexusDB Embedded Free now available via GetIt

Good news, everyone! :)

Marco Cantu has just informed me that the NexusDB Embedded Free edition is now available in 10.1 Berlin via GetIt (10 Seattle and XE8 updates still to come). Thank you Marco for pushing it through!

  1. What would this typically be used for?

  2. NexusDB Embedded is a full-blown database engine that compiles into your app and needs no extra distributed files. Table/query based access, fast, lean, it's the bee's knees :)

  3. Its nice to see that the old Embarcadero's protectionist stupidity died with the old management. In 2014 this wouldn't have happened. They would have been thinking "Will this cannibalize sales of Interbase?". Which is stupid. They need to think about the health of the entire ecosystem, and so this is a great move for them and for Nexus!

  4. Warren Postma but this is "Free" edition. Like other "offers" it's of little use since usually they are "capped".

  5. Why is it of "little use"? Lots of people might find it useful. If you don't, that's fine. My only point is that the old Embarcadero wouldn't have even let that into GetIt because it probably "competes" (in their tiny deluded minds) with Interbase.

  6. There's a grid on their site that compares the different license options. The only thing I saw mildly "capped" is it only works on Win32 platforms. At one time, the options in this particular license were probably ALL YOU COULD GET!

I like this kind of licensing model, where the company essentially opens up an older version (ie, feature set) of the software for free.

I wish EMBT would do that, like say giving away D7 for free to everybody who want's it. The thing is, D7 is still in active use in a lot of places, precisely because it's a solid, robust product that continues to be used to build production apps for Win32 target environments.

  7. Warren Postma and David Schwartz, ok; so it's better than the other "offers" i have tried out. I'm primarily a Firebird-monkey but do consult about "datasets" in a very wide context. I'll check it out. Thkx.

  9. Now only available for XE8 up, glad I never went with this for when I moved from D7 to XE4

When XE4 was the latest game in town, you could have downloaded our Free edition for it at the time, and it would still have worked just fine now. But since then, we have chosen to distribute this edition via GetIt which is available in XE8 and up. It is a small step toward reducing the number of compiler versions we support and the number of versions that have to be tested.

  11. XE4 is still the latest game in town for me :-) being a single programmer I can't afford to keep up to date with the way Delphi has now gone on the new releases.
