(Or Getit Feature Request)

(Or Getit Feature Request)
Rant? no, it's a suggestion to specify the correct name of the free components on Getit. I believe Get-it needs another category group for "Free Trials" or mark those as Free-Trial on the thumbnail or description. I'm talking about woll2woll's firepower and infopower.

Days ago I try to install them (not knowing nothing about them) and the IDE just stops at loading asking for a serial key and some weird errors/message that I don't remember, I remove both, without testing; today I seek to install them again just to check what was this "free" things then I see in the name of the installer that is a trial "InfoPowerStudioBerlin_trial.exe".

I don't like to install trials (because of past bad experiences). If Getit shows the "trial" word I will not try it, or maybe yes, but after investigate more (videos, demos).

Thanks!

  1. And a new category is not needed - BeaconFence is labelled TRY NOW which makes it pretty obvious it's trialware.

  2. jeff weir yes I did notice that as well. There is a filter as well for FREE. However FirePower and InfoPower are I assume Trial. So maybe it should be made more obvious they are trial or require S/N.

  3. A. Bouchez Yes I have to agree. It should be Embarcadero's policy to have an open install system. Without this the product will not grow in my opinion. If Embarcadero's product is better than the alternative it SHOULD be able to stand on its own merit. There is cross over in so many area's, if MS or Apple took this stance where would the IDE and Embarcadero's whole product be?

  4. Maybe also a "community" category with Samples, Components, Templates, etc that could be sent/read by anyone

  5. Agustin Ortu Great idea. User examples, maybe also the EMB demo's could be pulled that way as well.

  6. Brett Wilton Apple actually has the same stance. You can't list apps similar to Apple's apps. You also couldn't list apps that were too similar to existing apps. Or you couldn't in the past anyway. Not sure if they changed it with their new fast approval process.

I'd like to see all the Embarcadero samples in GetIt as well.

  7. Hey Eli M, not quite the same thing but I know what your saying. To have a vibrant echo system for developers it needs to include competitive components. If EMB's product is superior it should win out. What if EMB purchases another vendor say TMS charts would they then block use of Steema Charts. Would Devart components ever get accepted into GetIt now that EMB owns FireDac. My opinion is its short sited. You need competition and innovation. You need the community. Just my 2c.

  8. something else that would be really nice is for the default component palette to be slimmed-down and have lots of the libraries moved into GetIt. I've never used IntraWeb or the reporting tools, for instance. There's so much stuff installed by default that I don't use it's ridiculous.

Also, move towards the ability to support segmented installs. Like, move Indy to GetIt then allow separate pieces to be installed if you want, rather than the whole thing.

  9. Agustin Ortu Be aware that a "community" category may have potential security issues... in fact, all packages should be signed (I suspect GetIt does not feature digital signature yet), and verified. Otherwise you may encounter issues like http://blog.npmjs.org/post/141702881055/package-install-scripts-vulnerability

  10. Thank you IDERA/Emb ... that was fast! now if you can make two more things to improve GetIt:
    1) That versions shows complete, maybe on the full description text.
    2) Maybe show a "flag" on the installed old ones when exists an update.
    * I need to uninstall packages so I can only see the new ones.
