I'm in the market for an Android device. It doesn't have to be a phone, however I'd prefer a device with a display at least the size of the Samsung S7 (maybe a little smaller). Also preferably inexpensive, however the absolute-must-have requirement is that the OS is upgrade-able in a timely manner (i.e. not having to wait ages for the manufacturer to provide one), and of course that I can build for it with Delphi.

I recently have bought LG K10 LTE Dual and I like it. It comes with Android 6.0.
ReplyDeleteGalaxy S5
ReplyDeleteDidn't tried but Honor 5c seems a nice candidate (less than 200euros)
ReplyDeleteone of the most important troubles with android is that you may get the next version on any brand new high end device, the next version is not always assured, unless you get a nexus device, now pixel (not sure if it will replace nexus) and even with this devices you may get it or not.
ReplyDeleteThe Nexus 5X and 6P are still good phones. The Huaweis are good too.
ReplyDeleteGil Padilla Are Samsung devices prompyly updated to the latest Android? No. Certainly the S5 is well behind. It's also got a smaller screen than the S7. Doesn't seem like it will be at what David is looking for.
ReplyDeleteMy first search for S5 prices turned up items more expensive than an S7; go figure! I used to have a Nexus 5, which unfortunately disappeared somehow, however I do remember that updates arrived pretty swiftly after release. Remember also that it doesn't have to be a phone. I have a Lenovo Tab 3 7 (tablet), but it's stuck in lollipop land at the moment.
ReplyDeleteMi4 LTE , only 799 RMB(118.55 USD). Can flash android 4.4 to android 7.0, and it's the only android phone can flash windows 10 mobile.
ReplyDeleteLook At Honor Devices, they have in the Moment still Android 6, but Huawai has announced soon to upgrade to Android 7

ReplyDeleteI'd only consider a Nexus device at this point.
ReplyDeleteAsbjørn Heid ...or Pixel device.
ReplyDeleteLars Fosdal Inexpensive Pixel where? :P
ReplyDeleteAsbjørn Heid Nexus devices are a dying breed, it seems. Pixel replaces them. You didn't specify inexpensive in "I'd only consider a Nexus device at this point." ;)
ReplyDeleteLars Fosdal I specified inexpensive ;-)
ReplyDeleteyes, he did specified inexpensive, that's why i'm subscribed to this conversation !
ReplyDeleteIn that case, grab a Nexus while they last.
ReplyDeleteWhich one inexpensive Nexus?
ReplyDeleteThe 5X is fairly affordable here, and has a display size similar to a S7.
ReplyDeleteBuy directly from Google.

ReplyDeleteI got one S5 not long ago, as soon as I turn it on with out the SIM card connected to WIFI it did updated it self. Of course it also depends on the carrier.
David Nottage check ebay, New S5 run at $180, used from $125 unlocked.
ReplyDeleteGil Padilla It's running Android 7.1 is it?
ReplyDeleteNick Hodges The Nexus 5X and 6P can no longer be bought from Google here in Norway.
ReplyDeleteLars Fosdal Really? That's too bad.
ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it, I don't know if they can be bought here either.
Either way, my recommendation would be to buy the unlocked Google Device of the Day, whatever it is.
Nick Hodges I concur. The Nexuses are available outside Google Store - but you may want to ensure that it is not locked to a specific phone company.
ReplyDeleteI'd buy a nexus 5x, amazing phone. I have one myself.
ReplyDeleteOn Amazon it's around 270 u$s 32gb unlocked. The 16gb version it's a little cheaper, but nowadays 16 gb on a phone is little to nothing, since the OS will reserve around 4 or 5
I think you can not rely on any manufacturer updating the OS in a timely manner. That only really happened with Nexus devices, and even these will not get the latest version now. Maybe instead you could buy a cheap phone (or tablet) and a new cheap one every time a new Android version becomes available.
ReplyDeleteAdvantage: You can test different OS versions without reflashing.
Disadvantage: It's far from environment friendly and might be slightly more expensive.
David Nottage I have the Sony C5, which runs Android and the screen is quite big for smartphone. I have to wait for official updates of the OS but you can always bypass this and install the updates
ReplyDeleteBuying a new handset is no guarantee that it will have a new OS. Plenty of handsets sold today still have lollipop
ReplyDeleteDavid Heffernan Not yet but there are rumors that http://pressks.com/sci-tech/android-7-0-nougat-update-samsung-galaxy-s5-s6-s7-s7-edge-note-7/2213/
ReplyDeletepressks.com - Android 7.0 Nougat Update For Samsung Galaxy S5, S6, S7, S7 Edge, Note 7 | Press News Release
Just as I said then. You are not up to date but are waiting for Samsung.
