Anybody have a link for Delphi 7?

Anybody have a link for Delphi 7?

We're using Delphi 6, and I managed to convince management that an upgrade will bring stabilization of the environment, making the devs more productive. They want to see a POC, demonstrating that there is no major porting effort or impact.

I don't need keys as an eval license will do nicely for this exercise. Borland isn't hosting it anymore and most of the other download sites are blocked. I found one on GoogleDrive, but it had a keygenerator included and our antivirus software promptly deleted the 270Mb archive.

Isn't free at this stage in anyway?

Any help will be appreciated.

  1. Porting to Delphi 2007 is no problem at all, if you have the sources of all your components. And you can even still get it if you buy the current version (I think). Delphi 7 isn't available any more. Getting an evaluation version of Delphi 2007 could be difficult though.

  2. Why try to show proof of concept on anything but Berlin? A 100% discount is available for the starter edition which should be ample to show features and proof of concept.

  3. No, it is not free or even supported.
Did you present to your management a real upgrade (current Delphi Version) scenario?

  4. Fabio Nascimento Lance Rasmussen That's the final goal. Going to Delphi 7 means having to upgrade to Berlin licenses. First prize would be to be on Berlin and with luck we won't run in to too much Unicode issues.

When dealing with large corporates, I found keeping change to small increments works best.

  5. The problem with small increments is that when you wait so long, you don't have the option or luxury. And you wouldn't have an option to get D7 cheap and then move up.
You can purchase Berlin and then, if needed, use their option to get registrations going back to D2007. But to be honest, there's really not a point. I've had every IDE and once you make that move into Berlin, it should be smooth sailing.

  6. Lance Rasmussen I hear you. There's no appetite for a major code migration though. The product should have been discontinued / retired 3 years ago - you know the story.

  7. While doing so you should also consider updating to Windows XP! scnr

  8. Stefan Glienke He he he... Win98 is in the pipe line too! Baby-steps...

  9. If there's no appetite for a major migration then you should stick with D6.

  10. Really? You seem to have survived all these years with it. I know we used it for many years. Which particular breakage is resolved in D7?

As you should know, a system this old has gone through many developers and teams. The fact that the project is stuck in D6 says more about the company than the team.

Form inheritance is a big issue in D6 which was greatly enhanced in D7. General project switching is also much more stable in D7.

The whole system is package-based, so there's a constant switch between projects. It is particularly noticeable now that we're starting to get the system in to a test harness.

  12. Even if you could switch from Delphi 6 (2001) to Delphi 7 (2002)... are you sure you can still get/buy a legal copy of Delphi 7? You might want to look into that before creating a POC. (Or you might be planning to buy 10.1 and use the previous-versions offer)

  13. I remain unconvinced that D7 will make any real difference to your work.

    That was our thinking exactly.

  15. David Heffernan I assure you, this is not the first time I found a project stuck in D6. The simple migration to D7 is like switching on a light in a dark room.

  16. I can't know for certain but I think your local Delphi-reseller should be able to help you. We can't provide you with the download because Delphi 7 isn't officially available anymore but maybe your reseller could give you the download to evaluate. That said... the download link Jeroen provided is from Embarcadero itself so is as "official" as you can get. But I'm not sure you can download it if there is no login-cookie set (edit: I guess you can because my clean linux-machine does download it). Don't download it from any other source than Embarcadero because you will most likely get trojan horses with that too.

  17. Yeah, better trust embarcadero than other sources
http://altd.embarcadero.com/download/delphi/d7/esd/HDB1370WW15183_D7Pro.zip this is pro version and requires a valid license key obviously.
