Do you code in Delphi ?
Update: 296 Yes in one week = 3.3% of the 9K members. Not a massive number, but it is summer and holidays perhaps?

On the other hand - if it had crept over 5%, I would have been surprised.

ReplyDeleteWe are the remaining Delphi developpers 😎
ReplyDeleteStéphane Wierzbicki Well, I am in a team of four Delphi developers, and I am the only one actively using this community. I would guess that less than one in ten participates in online fora. The rest simply code. That goes for any language.
ReplyDeleteLars Fosdal, I'm kidding you indeed 😀. You must be right but I found the Delphi echosystem really quiet for some times now
ReplyDeleteStéphane Wierzbicki - Oddly enough, EMBT is producing more documentation and samples than ever before, so that is a good thing - but - I agree, there is less activity in general.
ReplyDeleteI would tend to assume that this stems from the lack of a decent Delphi version for enthusiasts and hobbyists. The starter version is ridiculous, and the Pro version doesn't really feel pro anymore. Where is its much needed Linux support!?
And then there is the insistent attempts at creating value for Enterprise, at premium prices, which basically mostly are high-priced silos designed to lock you into some sort of license/subscription agreement.. I just get this sickening Inprise deja-vu from it.
For a corporate / professional developer - the price/value of the enterprise version and a subscription update is acceptable, but I fear the hobbyist entry level is too limited, and too costly for growing the product.
Unfortunately, without the enthusiasts and the hobbyists - the grass root will die off, and the next generation of developers will chose other tools.
Lars Fosdal "The starter version is ridiculous" Yes!!
ReplyDeleteYes, "the starter version is ridiculous" said my son when he saw my Enterprise version...
ReplyDeleteMagno Lima Ridiculous against Lazarus, too, or against XE Pro.
ReplyDeleteWell said Lars Fosdal, EMB have not targeted this correctly in my opinion. Linux has traditionally been hobbyist, if you want people to use the product you have to encourage people and I think having Linux compiling would have been a great opportunity for hobbyist's. Pro version has got to the point we are seriously looking at stopping subscription and moving to other products. We have been using these dev tools for 20+ years so its not a light hearted descision when we start even discussing that.
ReplyDeleteTheoretically, they should go the other way and put the Linux compiler in the Starter edition. Seed the ground with hobbyist projects that upsell into commercial projects. Yes, only something like 2% of a userbase interact with online communities.
ReplyDeleteSmall community. High price. Inconsistent roadmaps and delivery. Bugs. Vastly fewer resources in terms of developers, instruction, 3rd party tools and components. Ownership changes. Tough technology "sell", as perceived as unknown, dead, or dying.
ReplyDeleteI'm not advocating that Delphi devs leave what's working for them and their clients. Just that I found other things work for me and my type of projects better, with far less friction, and at a much lower price.

ReplyDeleteEmbarcadero walk as a turtle, they collect more money from developers and every year they give some minor improvements that already existed in other companies like PC SOFT who have a powerful IDE with rich library, in 2017 we can not send sms and access batterie functions with RAD Studio!!
ReplyDelete+Kerbadou Ghazali I guess you are talking about Windev. Yes, that's true that you can do a lot of thing with it but IMHO it is far far behind Delphi. It's programming language isn't OO at all and you are stuck with bundled visual component. Delphi on the other side need an urgent polishing... and there is so much to do...

ReplyDeleteAnd for the battery level did you tried this ?

i spoke about Windev Mobile that is very far from Delphi, in your opinion all programmers can translate from Java to Delphi!!, Embarcadero extract money from us with slowing time. Delphi library is poor.
