FWIW, I switched from VMWare to VirtualBox recently and I find VirtualBox to be a lot less problematic and easier to work with. In particular, I've had problems with sluggish mouse handling in VMWare for a couple of releases now, and there's none of that in VirtualBox. Also, I was able to move a VM from Windows to Mac and back with no problems. It's free an open-source, so you don't need to worry about buying separate products for Windows and Mac (and others).
It's been a while, but I feel about the same way about VMWare vs VirtualBox. VMWare seems much more smooth and professional with a lot more options. Maybe we both need to try the other one again... : )
It has NOT been a while for me ... just a few months, in fact. And I use VMs regularly. I did quite a dance with the support people from VMWare a year or so back trying to get the issue with the mouse sluggishness to stop. They kept wanting me to try more and more stuff, and it was really taking up a lot of time with no benefit to me. I actually avoided using the VM as much as I could. My use of VirtualBox was due to someone else who gave me a VM that was created with VB, so I loaded it up and played with it. No mouse problems! Even after moving it from the PC to my Mac. When I open my VMWare VM, it's still the same with a sluggish mouse and everything. Nothing has changed there. Why should I spend money to upgrade it when I'm getting better performance from VirtualBox?
