Someone can create a different method of accomplishing the same. If you do, you can spend about 200.000€ that cost the patent (at least in Europe).
Patent something does not mean that this is going to have success. Only that you deserve the exploitation use of the idea.
Apart from these things, to get a patent, your invention, must have a group of characteristics to be accepted by the patent office: that the invention is new, involves inventive activity and is capable of industrial application.
