  1. David Heffernan But then askers will not be able to join SO and post a question within 5 seconds ;P

On more serious note, the whole quality and moderation process on Stack Overflow and other sites is not well presented to the Stack Exchange newbies. It is easy to sign in and join, but Quick Tour does not emphasize the site rules and what can happen if you don't follow the rules. You have to dig that information on your own.

  2. I put together two posts I thought we formed well and got banned from posting after that. So now I just use it in a read only fashion. I don’t have a problem with strict rules around asking a question but they ban a little too quickly

  3. If they're so frigging concerned about the quality of questions, there should be a flag that prevents answering until so many people have voted it as "ready" or something like that.

I've noticed that the more effort I put into asking questions, they're longer and more detailed, and they tend to get way fewer responses. I try to anticipate the various things I'll be asked along the way and address these concerns.

It seems the questions that get the most replies are very short, vague, almost unintelligible questions, mostly by people for whom English is an effort. They're almost always edited, but never to add more details.

In many cases, there are as many replies about the question itself as about the answer.

And I think the whole ban on "recommendations" sucks. What's the point of having a huge number of people swarming around a water cooler if you can't ask for suggestions on things? Perhaps there simply needs to be a separate track where people go to ask questions that are deemed of that nature. (On FB, there are several groups for Wordpress. In one instance, the owners set up one for general WP questions, as well as separate ones for "Plugin suggestions" and "Theme suggestions". It works out very well for all involved.)
