I don't think any of these have been shut down. It's just that Emba's IT can't keep their public facing servers up for any length of time. They will come back at some point in the future. This is situation normal.
ReplyDeleteit is a shame for years
ReplyDeleteThe forums are offline - they were the target of very heavy spamming, which was causing a lot of side effects. We are moving to a whole new community platform. That involves combining the legacy forums and the new community forums. Things will be migrating over time, so stay tuned.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I'm not sure what is up with Marco's blog. I know he was traveling a lot recently, so it might be a while before he is able to address the blog issue.
ReplyDeleteAmazing that a tech company can't manage this properly
ReplyDeleteI suppose it is difficult to manage servers that a located in someone's bedroom whereby the occupant sleeps and stays stoned most of the time...
ReplyDeleteI will miss the content ... If not migrated ...

ReplyDeleteIf there is a problem and it's being worked on, why is there no public announcement about that?
ReplyDeletePerhaps they can't make an announcement because they no longer have control over any of their websites.
ReplyDeleteThat would be consistent with them failing to update their Mac OSX pages that claim, erroneously, that Delphi apps can be submitted to the App Store. I've assumed that they didn't update that because they were embarrassed by it, but perhaps they can't.
Happenings like this honestly give me the creeps considering Embarcaderos ability to stay in the market ...
ReplyDeleteBTW cybertribe.de - Let's buy Delphi
ReplyDeleteBTW2
ReplyDeleteCurrently there might be the possibility to raise approx. 3,200,000 € once and 73,000€ yearly by the letsbuydelphi community.
(Of course a very big disclaimer: Could be that people entered values assuming other currencies or just for the fun of it - which of course would be very mean. Could also be that they are not willing to pay anymore. Will make the survey updateable as soon as possible..-)
If I take the average of the yearly willingness to pay this leads me to a 615 € mean - I figure that would be a good price for a yearly subscription of an "all in" Delphi version.
Roland Kossow This is fantasy world
ReplyDeleteNot sure what "this" refers to exactly, but I think we have had that discussion a while ago - we might see in the future. In lack of better ideas and ways to do it, I will continue to try to gather a letsbuydelphi community via that aggregator.
ReplyDeleteRoland Kossow Something like that would require leadership. I've seen nothing at all that suggests there is leadership for what you propose. These so-called pledges are worthless.
ReplyDeleteBut let's entertain this a little more. Where is your business plan?
Leadership and a business plan are not yet relevant given the current lifecycle phase of that idea. First there would be a much higher willingness to pay. Then I - and hopefully many others - will put more effort into that idea. Let us not continue this discussion now - you have made last time many valid points - I know you are smart - I understood what you mean - and your words do not fall on scorched earth with me. Ok?
ReplyDeleteWhat would be "We are moving to a whole new community platform." be different to the old one if the people manning it are the same that can't cope up mitigating spam?
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma Some powerful rose tinted spectacles there
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma It doesn't really maintain it though. Quality is poor and it doesn't keep up with developments in the tech world. The compiler that I use, dcc64, has had no meaningful developments for years.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about technical debt. From comments in the forum over many years, a picture started to emerge of the forum as a completely custom code base of ancient tech held together with spit and baling wire completely manned by one person running on old hardware that Embarcadero wouldn't upgrade.
ReplyDeleteWhat's baffling is that nowadays you have plenty of open source forum platforms to choose from that are also available remotely hosted. A one-time operation to get the data ported and then it should be trivial to maintain.
Thomas Mueller "If there is a problem and it's being worked on, why is there no public announcement about that?" Where would they post it? The forums are down. ;-)
ReplyDeleteBut seriously there's no culture over there of keeping customers informed on a timely basis about anything and we don't get a response unless we pick up torches and pitchforks. It reminds me of one of my first jobs at a small company where I overheard the office manager explaining to a new employee that he wasn't to pay a bill until someone called him complaining that the bill was past due. Then he was to say that the check was in the mail and issue a check to pay it only then. :-(
The foundation of the forums server is nntp, a protocol that evolved over the last 30+ years. Mirroring nntp back and forth over multiple instances is not exactly rocket science: it has been done for decades.
ReplyDeleteInterfacing nntp to/from other channels (like forums, discourse, etc) is well established as well.
But nttp is text based and far less sexy than web 2.0, flashy emoticons, etc.
If I had a say, and nntp is no option any more, I would move forward to a solution based on StackOverflow technology. Not heaven either, but very solid.

I’m really on the fence right now about renewing. I’ve got about a month to decide. Doing straight VCL work in Delphi and am running Berlin. Frankly I could have stuck with Delphi 7, but I don’t regret upgrading. I can’t really see any reason to keep the sub at this point since I gave up on FMX other than to make sure Delphi sticks around.
ReplyDeleteI’m on the subscription for enterprise. I don’t think the price is exorbitant if they were adding value . I think they should target web assembly and let people run vcl apps on the web.
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma Why not let the subscription lapse? If you don't need any new features, why pay for them?
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma Well, he clearly stated that he hasn't needed anything beyond Delphi 7.
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma Yeah, I've no idea what that comment is talking about, nm
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma I get that. I just don't need it for my needs, and it sounds like Mike does not either.
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma Are you saying that once you drop subscription, the only way to get a new version is to buy an entire new licence?
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma That's always been the case. Upgrade price is more than annual subscription. If you only upgrade every few years then it works out cheaper for you. Nothing new there.
ReplyDeleteThis is a long lived app. It’s already 14 years old and I don’t see porting it anytime soon . Maybe parts of it to a web front end. It’s strictly a vcl front end with rest calls to a server written in go so I’m not using any of the “enterprise” features. I could downgrade to pro at this point. That might be an option for me. Or I can just cancel the sub and buy some upgrade later if I need to. As Michael said, they removed the upgrade option altogether, but I’m quite sure at least once a year they will offer flash upgrade pricing. My only concern is that Berlin stops working on windows 10 at some point in the future and I can’t build the app anymore. This will definitely be the last closed source development tool I ever use.
ReplyDeleteDavid Heffernan I'm fairly certain there are no more upgrades; stop paying subscription and you have to pay full price for a new version. :-(
ReplyDeleteJoseph Mitzen hmm, news to me. That sucks. They really hate their customers.
ReplyDeleteMichael Thuma I was using ado when this was a 2 tier app. I started to migrate to firedac but was experiencing various issues so I just removed all of my tdataset code altogether and cobbled together my own mvvm style framework. It’s a little more code but now I can build combo, list, and grids against plain old Delphi arrays and vectors.
