Lars Fosdal You are correct, the lawsuit is about APIs. But, I think Google might be changing the API, by starting with a new language as a first step. Don`t be surprised if in a few versions(maybe 5 versions from now) of Android that there will be changes to the API. They might eventually replace the java.X libraries by android.X libraries and developed using Kotlin.

Daniel Rail Kotlin actually runs on the same VM as Java. Replacing the APIs is far from trivial, as you would have two distinctively incompatible versions of your apps and source code - even if you stayed with Java.
ReplyDeleteI never was a fan of Ellison and Oracle, and this certainly doesn't help in that respect. Java should have been fully open sourced a long time ago.
The judgment in that case will result in an appreciable amount of money, plus royalties on units yet to be sold. Appealing it wont prevent Google from paying the judgment. The best Google can hope for is the funds to be placed in escrow during the appeal, that is, if the plaintiff will agree to it.
