Did the maintenance service for Delphi / RAD-Studio always have automatic renewal after a year? I seem to remember that this was different before and was a bit surprised when I today got a renewal quote mentioning that.

(And yet again, like last year, Embarcadero tried to slip Premium Support into the quote which nearly doubled the price. I think this borders on fraud.)

Yes it was always this way (I think). The Premium Support is a different story......
Semiautomatic. You still need to pay yourself. If not, it will be canceled.
ReplyDeleteThis year, for the first time, I was offered the chance to buy 3 years in advance for quite a hefty discount.
ReplyDeleteRichard Stevens I was even offered a discount on 60 months. Didn't take it though.
ReplyDeleteThomas Bornhaupt Ich habe schon seit mehreren Jahren Subscription (Wenn man es so formuliert klingt es wie eine Krankheit. ;-) ) und jedes Jahr verlängert.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that the price for Dephi Pro today is $1495, up from $1405 yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI particularly enjoyed being told that my subscription had nearly expired when there was two or three months remaining. I imagine "nearly" is subject to interpretation. And yes, they slipped the premium support on there.
ReplyDeleteRichard Baroniunas I must have managed to unsubscribe from those, or maybe they have never included me on the distribution list. I'm generally OK occasional with marketing emails, but monthly is probably a little too much.
ReplyDeleteRichard Baroniunas I feel fortunate to have been affected then :)
ReplyDeleteJennifer Powell Wow, $1495 for Pro, is that for a new licence, or renewal with Premium support?
ReplyDeleteIt is a new license with the usual one year support. Go see for yourself...
ReplyDeleteI would like to know the renewal price (for Pro); but all I can find is "Annually renewable at a fraction of a single upgrade cost".
ReplyDeleteThere is no upgrade now. The stoner that maintains the website forgot to change that statement.
ReplyDeleteRichard Baroniunas I cannot confirm the 50% here. Given that the current price already includes the first year subscription cost, the renewal price is roughly 22% of the current full price. At least my last renewal did cost that some half a year ago and it has always been at this ratio the years before. If it really were 50% of the full price probably nobody would buy it.
ReplyDeleteI have Rad Studio Enterprise and my renewal fee is about $1100 which means it is below the full cost of 3500.00 and brings it down to next to reasonable costs.
ReplyDeleteI paid €737 for a two year standard subscription update for Professional. Quite reasonable. I was offered the Premium staff first.

Then simply vote with your wallet. Hit them where it hurts and stop renewing. They'll go out of business or change their tune.
Persnonally I do not buy any subscription based software. There is NO advantage in it for me. The company gets money regardless if they do any work or not. How does that benefit me? I'll upgrade when I actally see it is worth upgrading - like it was done for years is the good old days.
Graeme Geldenhuys Except that in contrast to the good old days there is no upgrade available anymore. You have to buy a new license after your subscription ran out. Based on the current pricing scheme this means to wait for at least five years before buying a new version. Less would be cheaper with subscription - let alone the additional benefits of a subscription. If I would upgrade my Delphi version just every five years I would be out of business long before.
ReplyDeleteGraeme Geldenhuys Uwe Raabe Uwe is correct, you bail you pay, you renew you pay, either way you are paying to use Delphi.
ReplyDeleteRichard Baroniunas since we still use Delphi 2007 at work I have considered not renewing the subscription several times. I still renewed it anyway, because once I stop, management will not let me buy updates (or new licenses) when it becomes necessary.
ReplyDeleteUwe Raabe : we are still using XE3 which is 5 or 6 years old. We are not out of business yet. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy next question is, how many of you have subscriptions, but don't actually use the newer versions in development because upgrading massive projects and 3rd party components are too much to bear. Thomas Mueller already confirmed he has a subscription and doesn't use new versions. I believe there are many like him out there.
The whole "paper invoice" once a year just seems so backwards. Just ding my credit card for $50-$75/m and be done with it. Then put the premium support in a plan like Amazon has. aws.amazon.com - AWS Support - Compare all support plans
