More misleading sales/marketing emails from Embarcadero.

More misleading sales/marketing emails from Embarcadero.

Got an email today from Idera with this subject line: "Embarcadero Maintenance and support has expired" -- it about gave me a heart attack, as I knew my license was expiring sometime in June and I did not want to let it lapse, but in the body of the email it says that my license is good until June 29, so I still have plenty of time.

They are also still trying to slip in the $500 charge for 'Platinum Support', which I never asked for or bought ever -- this is pretty sleazy sales tactics. I've been using Delphi since V1.0, but it's crap like this that really makes me question my continued loyalty!

  1. This community can only deal with programming issues, not business policy issues. Do you use Delphi out of loyalty, or because it gets the job done? If it no longer fill your needs or expectations, it is time to move on. There is a lot of green grass out there, but there sure are a lot of rough patches too. Shitty marketing is shitty everywhere, but who of us uses tools based on marketing info? Milage, experience, and tools fit for purpose gets the job done. Sure, it feels good to vent a little, but all in all, it doesn't often make for a lot of change.

In my experience, the business policy issues don't change unless and until the pitchforks and torches come out from the community. It certainly solved the Delphi Pro EULA change issue.

" Do you use Delphi out of loyalty, or because it gets the job done? If it no longer fill your needs or expectations, it is time to move on."

What about the large segment of the remaining users who can't move on because they're sitting on a million lines of Delphi code? Many users seem too invested to change unless the burden becomes huge.

  3. Lars Fosdal That's why I posted in the "off topic" section, since I wasn't talking about any technical or programming issue. I mainly wanted to warn people to not just blindly pay the invoice that Idera sends out -- I bet a lot of people pay for the "Platinum Support" without realizing it, whether they wanted it or not.

  4. you can always try to port your code to FPC/Lazarus... good luck and regards.

  5. Scott Pinkham I love Delphi and use it for any type of custom programming job that allows me to.

That being said i caught that "Platinum Support" thing and told them to remove it since i do not really use EMB support unless it is a installation issue.

I was an unhappy camper about that trick and that i continue to get a new sales person on all of Idera products.

But Lars Fosdal is correct that this is a developer section. Rant and raving doesn't buy you much but you are allowed to vent as far as i am concerned.

  6. Lars Fosdal to be honest I feel this is a valid off topic question and reminds people to be alert for the potential extra cost that can get slipped in.
In the past EMB have listened to people opinions from these types of posts.
The odd reminder like this can be of use.

  7. I can't imagine an experienced Delphi developer ever needing premium support to begin with. To me, it would have to be a show-stopping problem and the problem would have likely already occurred for someone else and thus be documented.

In fact I doubt an experienced Delphi developer would ever need to use any support incidences in a standard subscription, unless one just wants to do it to burn the coal, and so I guess you might as well do it.

  8. I usually read the new posts in this community right after breakfast on my android phone. Categories are meaningless as every post is equal, in fact I cannot find any mention of the category this was posted in. So "hiding" a rant in the off topic category doesn't work, at least not for me.
That said, I occasionally rant myself so not commenting on that ;).
What I do like to share is that here in the Netherlands I'm not getting any of these marketing emails, nor are they trying to sell me more than what I need (Pro). Whether that's because of my location, or because I ordered through a local reseller, I don't know.

  9. Mike Versteeg well I'm reading on my android device right now and I can see clearly this post is on Off Topic categoryhttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/a2JqpB-QPAE_C_Ywj01H87XY4noP5j1F7GeQyaKbiORlzyIVtZprOV0T0G6ogh4ZIMyA67QveQ

  10. Mike Versteeg I think it's because you are dealing with a reseller -- I used to go through a reseller too and got better service then. When I started my own business I went direct to Inprise and purchased from them and had a regular salesperson assigned to me, and I dealt with that same person for years and got good service. Now when I get contacted by someone from Idera sales it's a different person every time. I love Delphi, use it everyday and want to see it succeed, but I'm worried that Idera's sales tactics will turn people off. It's giving the product a bad reputation -- every company I consult for keeps asking about why we keep using Delphi, and I'm having to answer that question more and more lately.
