One question... but first:

One question... but first:
Goodbye to our subscription renewal this year. We really can not afford it.
What's worse, a representative in my country offering the renovation said something like this: "By not renewing, you can not activate if you exhaust your number of activations allowed (and maybe he/she add: we can't help you)" This sounds like blackmail.

Note:
I did not take the call, it was our programmer. So it is not clear to me how the representative really "offered" the renovation. But my programmer tells me that's what he said.

The question is:
If we do not renew our subscription, I know that we can re-install and exhaust the activations: Can we request activations without an active subscription?

(and, I don't want to install a license server)

:D
I demand an official "cr@ck" from Emba/Idera/... to be on the safe/legal side. Tied on our license/serial. That was the old way in D7. :D

Comments

  1. ... the "cr@ck" doesnt need to be official from embarcadero/idera, a 2 min research on google may be helpful ...

  2. Alberto Miola No, no no... please no. :D
I don't want that; If you remember the old days of D7, we just install, write the serial and that's all a working Delphi IDE. No need to use a remote soon to be dead server to activate it.

  3. I know of many developers who have purchased Delphi licenses yet use cracks because of the PITA of the registration tool etc.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Chad Hower I really do not trust the use of cracks.
What certainty could be had that the crack does not add some trojan code when compiling?
So, for that, the need for a legal official activator.

  5. You can use virtual machines but you should never change username or computer name after activation.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Marco Cantù The question is:
Can we request activations without an active subscription to Emba/Idera?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Panagiotis Drivilas That's an option but no the best option.
I have a case when my VM/box just crash because some celestial event (bad sectors in the host HDD). When I reinstall the VM & Delphi, I burn some activations because the computer name was different, then in other try the activation can't be done, desk support ask me to rename a file in the guts of windows, in that occasion the activation says that I have a lesser edition, etc.
    I don't want a cr@ck! :D

  8. You don't reinstall VM & Delphi, that way you will lose an activation. You should keep a backup of the virtual machine image files after activation and restore that.

  9. Why not a license server? Since I switched to a ELC server on a local VM last year I never have had problems and startup feels a bit faster, too. I can install on as many real systems and VMs as I feel the need, can start unlimited instances on each machine and on up to three machines simultaneously. If I go on travel I can work for up to 30 days without contacting the ELC server. No more activation - no more bumps. Usually you can change your workstation licenses to network licenses during the subscription renewal process for no or minimal cost.

Also, I for myself don't see the subscription price too high. Well, unless you accept the first offer containing the Premium Subscription, which is purely optional and you can request to have it deleted from the quote. Failing to renew an active subscription looks like a pretty bad idea to me. Don't you make enough profit with the tool?

  10. Mr. E ! I am not endorsing the use of cracks. Just saying that many find the registration troublesome and resort to cracks despite owning the product.

  11. I recently switched "my" subscription to network named user and set up a VM with the license server running on one of our XenServers. Works fine inside our LAN and with a bit of ssh tunneling magic I can also use a off site installation. This works for Delphi 2007 and up.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Btw. switching a named user license to a network named user license requires an active subscription. But it can be done any time. According to embarcadero Germany it's actually easier to do it before renewing the subscription.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think you are making something out of nothing. The rep is talking nonsense. If you want to contact Emba to check, why are you posting here? Contact Emba directly.

  14. Reading again Thomas Mueller suggestion, looks the best option is the lic. server; our active subscription is near the end so I need to be fast.

If Thomas allows me to asks, are you aware if a lic. server allows to:
    * Activate Delphi in a PC with different name/windows version?
    * Can still install and use GetIt components?
    * With a bit of ssh tunneling magic I can also use a off site installation (Need that when we are in the void working, just we need that *awn Internet working)

I'll appreciate if there is something else that need to be aware that you want to add.

Btw I'm searching for the Lic.Server, I found this one (http://docwiki.embarcadero.com/ELC/en/Installing_the_Embarcadero_License_Center) and it points to "elise" (http://license.codegear.com/lservers/elise.jsp)

  15. David Heffernan (off topic question :D)
Apart of my original question above
"Can we request activations without an active subscription?"

I really want to know if someone else here knows or are in the same scenario. As always I learn a lot asking here and not to Emb.

Uwe Raabe renew, that choice is not mine (is my Boss$). We use Delphi to make our internal tools: to extend our ERP software: Accounting, IRS software, we made a project to use scales and print labels and inventory.

I like your answers; They always make me think twice.

And as you see, my English does not always work when I try to ask here, I need to do better. I hope not to bother.

  16. To answer your questions:
    * With ELC you can activate Delphi on as many PCs as you wish. You can run it simultaneously on up to three, though. You can have as many instances running on each of these three PCs as your system can cope with.
    * GetIt works.
    * An activated Delphi can run for up to 30 days without connecting the ELC server. After 30 days you need a one time connection to refresh for another 30 days.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Mr. E ! Ask Embarcadero. They make the decisions. We don't. Why do people seem to think this is the Emba support site.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mr. E ! to add to Uwe Raabe 's answer:
    * Network named user licenses are tied to the login name of the user. So a user "twm" can install and activate as many installations on as many different computers (or more important: VMs) as he wants, as long as he always logs in as "twm". It doesn't matter if that's a domain or a local account btw.
    * Once activated an installation can work without connection to the licence server for up to 30 days. That usually is enough if you need to take your installation somewhere else on a laptop for a while.
    * A user can actively use 3 different installations at the same time.
    * The administrator of the license server can assign a network named user license to a different user. That means that the original user can no longer use that license.
    * As far as I know the license server does not need a permanent internet connection.
    * The license server is available for Windows and various Linux versions (I think there are other OSes, but I don't remember which). It's a Java program. I'm using Ubuntu Server because that needs a lot less resources than Windows. And of course it can run in a VM.
    * There are also "floating licenses", which are not tied to a user name. Everybody can use them until the user limit is reached. Those are more expensive.
    * I blogged about the "ssh" magic
    https://blog.dummzeuch.de/2018/04/28/remote-access-to-the-embarcadero-license-center-via-ssh-tunnel/

    ReplyDelete
  19. Mr. E ! The license you purchased is a perpetual license so in theory, if you exhaust your installation count, Embt should not have a problem resetting it for you. However, since this is a support query, there might be a chance of confusion. It's actually a pretty good question.

    ReplyDelete
  20. David Heffernan Because with other products, employees actually read forums? How does one "ask Embarcadero" smyway? Remember when the Delphi security vulnerability was found, it took the company that found it over three months to get a response from Embarcadero, and that was with the Department Of Homeland Security stepping in. Plus, it seems like the one rep OP's co-worker did speak with doesn't really know what he was talking about and was willing to say whatever would get him that extra commission. OP may not be wrong for thinking it quicker and more accurate to get a response from users than trying to get someone from Embarcadero to answer.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Delphi licenses are perpetual. They won't expire regradless of your subscription status.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Joseph Mitzen whenever I have had to ask for help with licensing issues, I have submitted a support query and had prompt response. It's not hard. Are you really incapable of working out how to ask for support from Emba? Really? You can't manage that. It's fine to be critical, but back it up with fact.

    ReplyDelete
  23. fact is, the registration system is a big ball of crap.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Farshad Mohajeri I know about the perpetual thing. Is the activation process without an active subscription my worry. Is a simple question that Embt can answer, and perhaps someone here knows and can answer; sometimes Embt employees visit us and if they are willing to answer wow!.

And right now I feel that I'll choose the ELC server option, using a Linux VM/vbox so I don't burn a windows licen$e; now I need to research how to setup that said *ubuntu vm to have it done. (ahh the Thomas Mueller post has the links!)

Asking here was good for me, I learned a lot; and if someone got the same question can get it done. (if only G+ haved a good search tool and bookmarking)

*Reading the instructions seems that I need a RHEL, I'll try in CentOS.

  25. David Heffernan I always look for your answers (related on programming) because you hit the nail most of the times and I like to read you at SO.

I repeat, your technical answers on support are more than good, but on this kind of themes (off-topic) well, thank you.

I'm not very versed in English; I'm afraid to provoke your rage without my intend.

So, this off-topic question is for you, genuine question:
With all respect, from what Country are you?
Maybe knowing that, I can be prepared to elaborate my questions more correctly when I look for your help.

    Regards

  26. Mr. E ! your question's are valid and of interest for others reading. Getting other dev's feedback on these type of things can be very useful, as can be seen from the comments above. Getting an official response from EMB can also be helpful.

  27. There is a deceptive trade practices lawsuit brewing over this issue with EMBT. I dont have a lot of details about it but it may get resolved before it goes that far. After all, this Texas and it is a good venue for cases like this.

The facts are simple: if you purchase a perpetual license then it is perpetual. Requiring a support agreement to activate a perpetual license after the fact is a breach of contract of the of the original license.

    ReplyDelete
  28. David Heffernan ". Are you really incapable of working out how to ask for support from Emba? Really?"

First, you don't know the things I'm incapable of! ;-)
Second, this isn't even support so much as a general question about their licensing policy and my point was that they don't tend to respond to general inquiries. But let's see how to get a response from Embarcadero....

Go to the web page. We'll try "resources"... ok, "support".... Now we have "registration and installation" and "product support", which is "for customers with a current support contract". I don't have a current support contract and I believe you mentioned you don't either, so I can't use that one. Let's try "registration and installation"... A simple web form, where you have to select product and version. Ok, let's say Delphi and most recent version.... Now I have five options, none of which apply... Installing the product, registering the product, registration limit increase, transferring a license, and rehosting a license server.

So that's out. Let's go back to the main page, scroll down to the bottom, and find a tiny "contact us" label. This one has a support phone number (no hours listed) and a few email addresses. One is "general" and one is "renewals". One of those MIGHT work. It's the weekend now but I'll shoot this question off to one or both of them this weekend and then we'll see if/when they respond. If that doesn't work I could try the "regional account manager", who has emailed me seven times since I downloaded a copy of starter edition and always wants me to " Please let me know when you've got a couple of minutes to chat about your goals and plans for this year." I've been tempted to assume he's flirting with me and write back that I'd love to share my hopes and dreams with him over a cup of tea and then a lovely stroll on the beach. But asking about licensing issues might be as far as I take our relationship.
