  1. I wonder if Delphi Praxis could use accounts fro mother servers, like most other comment services do. OAuth, OpenID and so on.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Arioch The They could, but according to Daniel, they have stayed away from it, since these logins are tracked by those services. He said he would be willing to consider it, if there was a massive number of requests for it - so far, not the case.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Lars Fosdal self-fulfilling prophecy

if person does not want a hassle to make 1001st password to get into a forum then that person would not want a hassle of making the 1001st password just to write down that request.

P.S. of course they are tracked, but is this inconveniencing him (server side) or users (client sie) ? the latter do have an opt-out.

    ReplyDelete
  4. To opt out, you need to associate yourself with that service. It seems a lot of people are opposed to that these days.

Personally, I don't mind being tracked by Google, so a "login with Google" would have worked for me - but since I use a password keeping service, having a unique, secure login with that 1001st password, works fine for me as well.

    ReplyDelete
  5. To opt out you just have to make that 1001st password the old way. Those opposed still can do.
They may also keep distinct usernames and passwords for every forum they use.

"password keeping service" - service or local app?

    ReplyDelete
  6. No Oauth - not my decision.

pwds - both. Server storage and local encrypt/decrypt.

  7. Thank you Lars Fosdal
    Joining to FB and MeWe.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi Lars Fosdal, do you plan to keep the MeWe group alive?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Fred Ahrens Well, it is there for people to use if they want. I will be reading and cleaning out crap - but - I will spend most of my time on DP.

  10. Lars Fosdal - YOU have moved. The rest of us are considering a move to many places, including your new place. While I am thankful for your time and effort here, I think it is a total disservice to the community to close way early while this gets sorts out. I question that you posted a link to only your community, and not any of the given others at least some billing. Sorry to say, the new group does not look very appealing, and now, I feel strong armed to join. You have done very well at closing the other forums you have run, and now I question you sunset of this forum as "just another google like move". Speaking of moving, I offered up a demo of a good job a complete scrape of a google group and moving it,. that went no where. Yes, I will join, but truthful, I look at the new forums and think "damn, that is a backwards move. we should move back to a terminal based CompuServe. You are the owner, judge, and executioner, so pull the damn plug like the other ones (and change the "from begin to end;" tag line to have period. Somewhere on this planet, I hope to find a forums where the users needs come first (and that is not closing early, but keeping the light on to the last possible moment). Thank you for the time you served here, but stopping new posts and new users early is a disservice to all.

  11. Joe C. Hecht - Ref. the scraping - DP can actually host the community data in a searchable form - including the graphics, and would be very interested in your assistance with scraping and feeding the posts to DP. The best way would probably be to use an intermediate storage format so that the import can be done repeatedly if so is needed?

Edit: Some time ago, I posted a Community Takeout that identifies all 12600+ posts in JSON format.
That can probably help in ensuring a complete export - and help with replacing references to other posts within a post.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Joe C. Hecht - Ref the closure:
Yes, it is a strong arm closing that is announced well in advance. I am indeed trying to make people to go to DP. Most of the "heavy hitters" are there already.

The final deadline is there dictating a move no matter what. The list of options of where to move to is limited - and probably not going to change, but there are options out there for those that do not want to use DP.

    So why close early?
I do it for two reasons:
    1. I no longer need spend time on maintaining the G+ community and can focus on DP and maintain MeWe.
    2. It gives us plenty time to migrate the old content.

  13. Lars Fosdal i can't login or register at en.delphipraxis.net because i already have an account for www.delphipraxis.net. Seems that the accounts are not shared but i can't create a new account with my e-mail on en. because my e-mail is already used (by german version of delphipraxis.net). Whats next?

  14. Yusuf Zorlu As it says in this post:

  15. Edward Morbius That Wiki has a really bad editor :(

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lars Fosdal Mediawiki, same as Wikipedia.

(I generally launch "edit with gvim" myself.)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Edward Morbius I'm used to Confluence.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Darian Miller That was the first alternative I suggested in this very post.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would prefer to have OAuth too, to login with Google/Facebook. Too much effort to create another account.

    ReplyDelete
  20. What is now the conclusion? I scanned the alternatives but I am really not convinced by any.

    community.idera.com - Programming Languages
would by a logical step but has nearly no traffic. As well a really living large forum is important for the SEO (search engine optimization) and should run under the domain of Embarcadero (and not Idera).

    Looks as "no plan".

    ReplyDelete
  21. Günther Schoch - The conclusion still is that this community is closing and the options of where to post instead, is at the top of this post. G+ is inevitably disappearing.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Lars Fosdal I have seen and tried as well to discuss with EMBT.
IMO https://en.delphipraxis.net is the only useful place with enough traffic. But I am always surprise how EMBT can forget about such important marketing instruments as powerful user forums.

  23. Personally i liked NPJ - multi-blog engine build on top of WackoWiki - but it is dead sadly.

One can try XWiki, it more or less supports Creole and they were giving free hosting for tests.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Joe C. Hecht terminals, CompuServe... Backward? Maybe. I was not there in BBS era.

But personally i still think distributed standardized thick-client NNTP forums of 1990-s were superior to flashy bangy unreliable WWW forums of today.

At least i always had warranty that half-written not yet posted text would not just disappear if internet or server or browser or god knows what had a short hiccup.

    ReplyDelete
  25. NNTP all the way! I'm still willing to add a Delphi group on my personal NNTP server in there is interest.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lars Fosdal > I'm used to Confluence.

Now that's a terrible wiki if I've ever seen one. I hated it with a passion, and would take MediaWiki over it any day.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Graeme Geldenhuys Yeah, it is amazing what you get used to at times.
It is very fragile as well, and dead links to images and etc is not rare, especially if you migrate from one repository to another.

  28. Does Delphipraxis happen to have a Tapatalk interface? I'm kinda fond of that.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Arthur Hoornweg not currently, I think. Will it cost the site something to have one?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I believe it's free, but it shows some ads.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Arthur Hoornweg in the client, I assume.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I googled Tapatalk in the Invision forums, and the results were not uplifting.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I register on it but get "You did not pass the security check. Please try again." I do not know how to pass through register.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jack Lee Read the instructions carefully. There are spambot prevention questions there that must be answered correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lars Fosdal Sorry I can not see any other information there.
    https://plus.google.com/photos/...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jack Lee It looks like your browser doesn't handle the bot busting code.
    Try from a desktop?

    ReplyDelete
  37. browser is google Chrome. maybe there are some JS code is band by GFW ?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lars Fosdal I'm in China main land, there is GFW and maybe it bans some code from your website. I have success to register by using a HK IP

    ReplyDelete
  39. I wonder of their forum is tapatalk-enabled to use it on phones

    ReplyDelete
  40. Arioch The I don't think so. The tapatalk extension takes a LOT of flak in the Invision boards.
